MEDO – Finalist for Spirit of Winnipeg Awards!!

MEDIA RELEASE

MEDO nominated for Spirit Award
by the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce

January 22nd, 2013

WINNIPEG The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce has nominated the Metis Economic Development Organization as a finalist in the start-up business category for the Spirit of Winnipeg Awards. The Spirit of Winnipeg recognizes local companies, charities and not-for-profits that have embraced change by taking a concept or idea and choosing to do things differently.

MEDO CEO Blake Russell shared his thoughts upon receiving the nomination. “The Metis have a long history of economic participation and business development in Manitoba,” he said. “MEDO continues that legacy with our interests in land development, business investment and management, employment and retail pharmacy services aimed at improved health outcomes for Metis people. Meanwhile, our financial services support Metis business growth, while our MEDO Affinity program harnesses the buying power of the Metis consumer audience through group buying among our merchant partners.”

As the crown corporation of the Metis government, building sustainability and improving the quality of life for Metis citizens remains our goal through engagement with private and public sector partnerships. This nomination supports our direction in achieving a true socio-economic business model.”

As of December 31, 2012, MEDO’s business activity has generated over $8 million for the Metis government, with an additional $1 million going to Metis-owned businesses last year through our procurement strategy. MEDO has recently invested $12 million into our property holdings and generated $3 million in revenue in 2012; a 30% increase over the previous year.

The winner of this prestigious award will be announced Friday March 1, 2013 at the Fairmont Hotel in Winnipeg.
